In theory, the gauge should be reading 0.01" instead of 0.10" per tip, via the metric system thats 2.1mm being displayed as 0.01" is 0.25mm

Going by that, if you tip it a maximum of 10 times then 1.00" would have been recorded. That seems way too high for it.
Tip it and see what it says on the screen, it should read the 0.01". If it did not do this before then a fault would have to be present, most likely the gauge itself, observe for any possible cable damage and check the pins in the Thermo/Hydro sensor itself to make sure it's fully clean as well as the pins on the plug to the gauge. If it continues you may need to order a new rain gauge.
