Re: WS-5000, very happy so far!

I'm curious if you've experienced any temp spikes with solar radiation? My 5000 seems to see a temp spike with the sun first hitting it, much more pronounced than surrounding stations.

Nope, haven't seen that so far. Then again it's been cold since it was installed, so I'm sure I'll see something when the heat/humidity kicks up in a few months.

I had a thought on the WS-2000/5000 console to run it on a USB power bank that also charges itself while plugged into 120V, but that seems like a bad long term solution. It definitely will power on 5V USB using one of those bricks, but most power packs won't do both charge and powering very well.

Instead, I went with a CyberPower ST425, one of the smallest they make, to keep my console running in the event of on outage. With the extremely low power draw of this console, it'd probably run 12 hours before the battery dies being the only thing on it. My servers (including the one that runs the router) and my ONT are all on separate UPS systems. Thing is, if my power is out, the power at the end of my street that runs the ISP fiber box will also be out, so it doesn't really keep me online. I just want to continue to collect data until it's restored.

Let us know how long it runs.
Even with no load a UPS consumes power just powering itself. I don't believe you'll get 12 hours, probably more like 4.
(but that's based on my experience a few years ago, your mileage may vary)

Will do. I'll run a test on it sometime this weekend and see what time I get.

What is special about the Ambient Weather App/Web-site?   If I can upload data to WeatherUnderground and to the web-site provided by the manufacturer (not Ambient), why would I also want to upload data to the AmbientWeather website?  Does it offer something other sites don't?

You might not have too much of an issue as the WS80 Ultrasonic anemometer has a slight doom to the solar sensor where the lux sensor is also located. As a result this tends to cause the rain to bead away and you don't get the lens effect so much.
I cannot guarantee that it wont happen but I dont see it as much on mine compared to the the Tri-wing/Bi-wing sensor.

Every online weather service has their own unique spin and feature set. Here are just some of the benefits of uploading to Ambientweather.net.

- Unlike most other services, you can upload a multitude of extra sensors sensors
- You gain access to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant skills integration for your data
- You gain IFTTT capabilities for your data
- You can make your data public if you want, or private, your choice
- If you make your data public, no account login is required, makes data easily available
- Leverage a multitude of 3rd party applications that have been created to integrate with AW.net API or write your own

Hi all

First post on this forum.. I've been reading it a lot but now time to start posting too :)

I've been monitoring the weather conditions for quite some time already. Back in 2012 I started with an Oregon WMR200s that was connected to a SheevaPlug running wview, uploading to my site and using the Saratoga templates to display.. It worked rather well but the sensors of the station started to break down (pluviometer already replaced twice, anemometer gripped, erratic signal).
Bottom line I deceided to buy a new station. I chose a Waldbeck Halley, a clone of the FineOffset WH2650. It did not need a console and this was a match.
Instead of wview, I went this time for weewx + GW1000 API + weewx-WD + Saratoga templates.

It is partly working but I found some strange things happening.

Initially I started weewx in simulator mode to check that everything was ok. Then I installed and enabled the GW1000 driver.
I ran the driver for a few hours and it was working fine. I remember seeing at that time the battery levels and -I think- the solar radiation too.

Once I was happy I thought I would purge the database to remove the initial simulator values (I didn't want those to appear in the history). To do that I simply removed all DBs and all generated files.

And here starts the issue I have now. Once weewx restarted the output would not look the same anymore. I don't see the sensor status tab nor the radiation graph.
I looked at the output of the driver and here it is:

I still continued setting everything up, playing with weewx-WD and Saratoga. Got it to work but some values were incorrect (looked like the parsing of the raw data was offset somehow). For example, the update date in the ajax part is displaying the cloud height and not the date. That might be because I set radiation to true (and there is no radiation being sent by teh WD plugin because of the above bug).

So anyone has an idea about what is happening?
I run firmware 1.6.3 on the WH2650, weewx version 4.4.0, GW1000 API version 0.2.0, weewx-wd version 2.1.2

Thanks!

BTW: I enabled debug and looked at the syslog. No error or anything looking suspicious there

For some reason the data from my PM2.5 sensor no longer appears on Ambient, lightning sensor + additional temp sensor still does.

I noticed that too. I suspect a bug in the Meteobridge software. I recommend posting in the Meteobridge forum so that Boris can have a look.

Thank you for your prompt response. I didn't actually expect any response to this old thread.  You have given me some points to consider.

I have Samsung SmartThings and RainMachines so integration is a plus.  RainMachines use Weather underground to integrate personal weather stations so that is simple, but perhaps there are other places where a weather-based trigger could be useful.

I like the simplicity of the Weatherflow Tempest, but at times, I would like to monitor some indoor locations, soil moisture, and air quality.  Also I am concerned about the accuracy of a haptic rain sensor.  I am considering an Ambient Weather or Ecowitt system in place of or in addition to a Tempest   Finally Air Purple is way to expensive, but I understand that the Ambient/Ecowitt PM2.5 system is wildly inaccurate when the air temperature is near the dew point.  Is it's data useful?  I wonder if using an integration would allow me to stop recording data when the air temperature is near the dewpoint and calculate a more accurate 24hr AQI.

today spring day, the solar radiation begins to rise, the wind was weak, in short, a good day to put the screens in difficulty, the vp2 pro ventilated and the davis screen always ventilated with wh31EP inside are the masters, but also the rad -14 is fine, it seems to follow the ventilated as an excellent performance behavior of the rad-02 which goes in line with the meteoshield pro, the davis 7714 is fine, but in the hours with high radiation it suffers a little. Does this unit provide solar radiation/uv information?

The Campbell Scientific RAD14 looks impressive as does the Barani Meteoshield Pro as far as passive radiation shields are concerned but for the price of the Davis 6838 FARS as all being relatively close in price I think the win goes to the Davis. I'm speculating. Just saying that if you are going to spend around the same amount of money then I don't see how the passive solutions can justify that cost.

in my opinion with the tests carried out so far, if I had to buy a screen, I would buy the metspec rad-14, it costs less than the meteoshield pro, and much less than the ventilated davis, but to be sure I have to wait this summer, to have the definitive confirmation of the his goodness

Well when I check pricing for the US I get the following.

$214 - RAD14 and I imagine that there is some additional shipping which I couldn't get easily?
$221.23 - Davis 6838 from Scaled Instruments + $24 shipping.
€200 = $240 - Barani Meteoshield Pro + €100 for world wide shipping!

Potentially the RAD14 could be cheaper if shipping is reasonable. But it will likely best case end up the same cost as the Davis (only $7 price difference, you can't call that cheaper...that is the same when you are talking lower $200 range).  And I'm not sure if there is a better dealer in the US for the Barani, because €100 for shipping is retarded. If you take shipping out of the equation the Davis wins as they are all in the lower $200 range.

Since you have to disconnect your unit once anyway to plug it in. Might not hurt to also run a test for your actual battery runtime with your device connected. I mean just so you know.

Good idea, should do 90 minutes or so, Ill try it tomorrow
well, it's done 7 hours so far....

Anyone know what the rated power consumption of a GW1000 is?

Not sure how long to wait...it could last a week at this rate! Anyway nothing else would last this long on my other UPS so it's definitely ok for my purposes, it would outlast the router, my PC and the fibre modem

The UPS is still reporting over 75%  charged
